There is a reason why our parents would bring us home every Halloween and dump all of out candy out on the table and not let us have a bite until each piece was inspected.  They loved us!  Kids look forward to Halloween because they get to dress up and eat candy.  Not only are they are too excited from all the festivities to take safety into consideration, but they are just kids!  It’s unreasonable to expect them to want to wait to eat all that candy.  That is why you, the adult, is in charge.  You are responsible for their good time and their health.  Here are some safety tips that you can follow this Halloween:

  • Show your child you are in the spirit too by dressing up with them.
  • Bring a flashlight with you.  It’s also a good idea to have your child carry or wear some of those festive glow sticks.
  • Never let your child go out trick or treating alone.  They should always be accompanied by a responsible adult.
  • Take your child trick or treating in an area with a lot homes, but an area you trust and you deem as safe.
  • Stand back and let your child approach doors on their own if they like, but keep a close eye on them and don’t stand too far away.
  • Ensure your child understands that he or she is not to go into the home of a stranger
  • Instruct your child not to eat any candy until you get home.  This allows you time for proper inspection of the candy.
  • Inspect each piece of candy when you get home.  You are looking for any kind of tampering with the packaging as well as puncture marks.
  • Watch the amount of candy your child ingests.  Too much can lead to at stomach ache.  This goes for you as well, Mom and Dad!

Have a safe and fun Halloween!
